making math make sense

AP Statistics

AP Statistics is a challenging course (obviously because it is an AP course) but also because statistics is a very different math course than the courses that precede it. There is far more higher level thinking such as analysis and evaluation. It is also dense with concepts and critical thinking, with far less focus on procedures.

As a result, students would benefit from a foundation for the concepts they will experience and to experience a shift in their mindset to prepare for a different type of math course.

Key concepts covered

  • Use numeric and graphical representations of data to draw conclusions while taking into account variation, and data collection and sampling. (2 related key concepts covered in 1st two meetings)
  • Use likelihood of random events to draw conclusions about probability distributions and sampling distributions.
  • Use confidence intervals to estimate population means, while taking into consideration related uncertainty.
  • Use a hypothesis test to draw a conclusion about a given population mean, while taking into consideration related uncertainty.

Class elements

  • Do Now – addresses prior knowledge and preview concept
